NRC to hold public meeting with Areva in Lynchburg July 24 to review performance of licensed activities

This story was published Tuesday July 8th 2008

By U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting with officials of Areva NP, Inc., in Lynchburg, Va., on Thursday, July 24, to discuss the results of an NRC review of licensee performance at the company's commercial nuclear fuel fabrication facility.

The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. (EDT) in the Areva corporate offices, located at 3315 Old Forest Road in Lynchburg, in the customer conference room. The meeting is between the NRC and Areva, but interested observers in attendance will be given an opportunity to ask questions of the NRC staff following the business portion of the meeting.

NRC inspectors reviewed licensee performance at Areva's Lynchburg facility for a period form April 22, 2006, through April 25, 2008, in the areas of Safety Operations, Safeguards, Radiological Controls, Facility Support and Special Topics. The review showed that Areva continued to conduct its activities safely, protecting public health and the environment.

NRC officials said the review did not identify any specific areas needing improvement. As a result of good performance, NRC inspections at the plant will generally be conducted during the next review period at the minimum level of inspection designated for this type of nuclear fuel assembly facility. Copies of the meeting notice and the NRC letter to the company outlining the results of the review will be available on the NRC Web Site at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The numbers to access the documents are ML081840685 and ML081610543.
