Hanford Waste Treatment Plant completes critical system design for High-Level Waste Vitrification Facility Richland, Wash. -- Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) engineers recently completed the design for the High-Level Waste (HLW) Vitrification Facility's heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. Critical to facility operations, the HVAC system will ensure contamination boundaries are maintained by directing the flow of contaminated air through the appropriate channels. It will also regulate the temperature of the facility, which will house two 90-ton melters that emit extreme amounts of heat. NRC Begins Special Inspection At Braidwood Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has dispatched a special inspection team to the Braidwood Nuclear Power Plant to review the circumstances surrounding the dual unit shutdowns that occurred on August 16. The incident did not affect public health and safety and both units remain safely shut down. The plant is operated by Exelon Generating Company LLC and is located in Braceville, Ill., 20 miles southwest of Joliet. NRC Schedules Meeting To Discuss Inspection Results For Crystal River Nuclear Plant Containment The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting in Crystal River, Fla., to discuss the results of an NRC special inspection looking into the circumstances surrounding a gap discovered in the concrete of the containment building at the Crystal River nuclear power plant last fall. The Crystal River plant is operated by Progress Energy on the west coast of Florida about 80 miles north of Tampa. Hanford Waste Treatment Plant Project's Analytical Laboratory mechanical systems design completed Richland, Wash. -- Engineers working on the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant (WTP), also known as the "Vit Plant," recently completed the mechanical systems design for the Analytical Laboratory (Lab), one of the five major nuclear facilities that compose the Vit Plant, bringing the facility another step closer to startup activities in 2013. NRC Issues Final Environmental Impact Statement For Cooper Nuclear Power Plant License Renewal Application The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued its final supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) for the proposed renewal of the operating license for the Cooper Nuclear Station in Nemaha County, Neb. The report concluded there are no environmental impacts that would preclude license renewal for an additional 20 years of operation. NRC Assigns New Senior Resident Inspector At R.E. Ginna Nuclear Plant 10-116Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in King of Prussia, Pa., have assigned Gordon Hunegs as the senior resident inspector at the R.E. Secretary Chu Dismantles Last of Retired Warhead During Visit to NNSA’s Pantex Plant; Program Completed a Full Year Ahead of Schedule WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced that the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has dismantled the last W62 nuclear warhead. Secretary Chu made the announcement after personally participating in the final W62 dismantlement during an August 11, 2010 visit to NNSA’s Pantex Plant outside Amarillo, Texas. NNSA, LANL Complete DARHT Improvements With Successful Multi-frame Hydrodynamic Test WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced today that Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility has completed another successful two axis, multi-frame hydrodynamic test following a period of facility maintenance and several key facility and technical improvements. NRC Monitoring ‘Alert’ Declared At Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is monitoring PPL’s response to an “Alert” declared this morning at the Susquehanna nuclear power plant, which is located in Salem Township (Luzerne County), Pa. The Alert – the second-lowest of four emergency classifications used by the NRC – was declared at 9:22 a.m. after toxic gas – believed to be Freon – was identified by workers in the Unit 1 Reactor Building. As a precaution, PPL, which owns and operates the two-reactor plant, has evacuated that building. No injuries have been reported. NRC To Hold Regulatory Conference With Omaha Public Power District On Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a regulatory conference with officials from the Omaha Public Power District on Aug. 18 to discuss issues related to the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant flood protection plan. The plant is located near Omaha, Neb.
