The Borexino Collaboration announced the observation of geo-neutrinos at the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory of Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), Italy. The data reveal, for the first time, a definite anti-neutrino signal with the expected energy spectrum due to radioactive decays of U and Th in the Earth well above background.

PartTec to market SNS-developed neutron detector system

One of five innovators to be honored at a ceremony and reception held at the Garden City Hotel on March 10, Samios will be recognized for his numerous distinguished scientific contributions, including his leadership in the successful construction of Brookhaven's premiere accelerator, the [http://www.bnl.gov/rhic/] Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and the experiments at RHIC that led to the discovery of quark-gluon plasma, a type of matter that is believed to have existed just microseconds after the Big Bang.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued annual assessment letters to the nation's 104 operating commercial nuclear power plants. "We ensure nuclear power plants are safe, continually inspecting them and rating their performance on a regular basis, as part of our mission to protect people and the environment," said Eric Leeds, director of the NRC's Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation.

NRC Denies Nuclear Industry Petition Seeking Extended Deadline for Security Enhancements

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has denied a petition submitted by the Nuclear Energy Institute on Sept. 25, 2009, that sought an additional nine months for nuclear power plants to comply with new security requirements. Specifically, the petition sought an expedited rulemaking that would revise the compliance date for new requirements in the power reactor security rule (10 CFR section 73.55) from March 31 to Dec. 31.

Exotic Antimatter Detected at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)

UPTON, NY - An international team of scientists studying high-energy collisions of gold ions at the [http://www.bnl.gov/rhic/] Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), a 2.4-mile-circumference particle accelerator located at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, has published evidence of the most massive antinucleus discovered to date. The new antinucleus, discovered at RHIC's [http://www.bnl.gov/rhic/STAR.asp] STAR detector , is a negatively charged state of antimatter containing an antiproton, an antineutron, and an anti-Lambda particle. It is also the first antinucleus containing an anti-strange quark. The results will be published online by Science Express on March 4, 2010.

First Test Labs for Next-Generation Internet Protocol (IPv6) Are Accredited

The first two laboratories have recently completed accreditation to provide testing services for the USGv6 Program. The USGv6 Program, developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), provides the basis for expressing U.S. government requirements for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) technologies and for testing that commercial products meet those requirements. The availability of commercial testing services is an important step towards the U.S. government's use of USGv6 acquisition tools, beginning in July 2010.

United States and Argentina Partner to Prevent Nuclear Smuggling

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today announced that U.S. Ambassador to Argentina, Vilma Martinez, and the Minister for Foreign Relations, International Trade and Worship, Jorge Enrique Taiana, signed an agreement in Buenos Aires to begin a cooperative effort to detect, deter, and interdict illicit smuggling of nuclear and other radioactive material. The agreement paves the way for NNSA to work with Argentine Customs to install radiation detection equipment and associated infrastructure at the Port of Buenos Aires.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has agreed to pay a $10,000 fine and implement a series of corrective actions related to radiation safety under an agreement reached with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In addition, a former radiation safety officer (RSO) at the NIST's facility in Boulder, Colo. will be prohibited from engaging in any NRC-licensed activities for one year for deliberate misconduct involving failure to provide complete and accurate information to the NRC.
