This story was published Thursday June 5th 2008 By the Herald staff The U.S. Senate approved the 2009 federal budget resolution 48-45 on Wednesday that included additional money for cleanup at Hanford and other Department of Energy sites. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., worked to add $500 million for the DOE environmental management program for nuclear sites across the nation. She's concerned about cuts to cleanup budgets under the Bush administration, said her staff. And that money is not included in the House budget resolution. "This funding will honor our commitment to facilities like Hanford after years of cuts and will get us back on track to meet critical cleanup goals," Murray said in a statement. The budget resolution sets spending levels for the upcoming fiscal budget year. |
