This story was published Friday December 12th 2003 By John Stang, Herald staff writer Bechtel Hanford President Mike Hughes on Thursday was named the new president of Bechtel Jacobs Co., in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Retired Hanford veteran Tom Logan was named interim president until Hughes' replacement is found. Craig Weaver, president of Bechtel National Inc.'s energy and environmental operations, said in a news release: "Our new contract for accelerated cleanup at (the Department of Energy's) Oak Ridge (site) provides us the opportunity to finish the work we've been doing for more than five years." Weaver added that "Mike's record as a leader in safety, working with stakeholders and running one of Bechtel's most successful environmental cleanup programs clearly makes him the right person to lead us on this new mission." Bechtel Jacobs is co-owned by Bechtel and Jacobs Engineering Group. It has been in charge of Oak Ridge's environmental cleanup since 1998. Hughes replaces Steve Liedle at Oak Ridge. Liedle, who's been with Bechtel for 21 years, will assist Weaver at the corporate level. Liedle was Bechtel Hanford's president from June 1997 to November 1999, when he was named president of Bechtel Jacobs. That's when Hughes, then Bechtel Hanford's vice president for operations, became the company's fifth president. And with four years at that post, Hughes was the company's longest-serving president. He has worked at Hanford since 1981. Although Logan retired last January, he has been traveling the country on special assignments for Bechtel. Logan has been with the Bechtel corporation since 1971. He joined Bechtel Hanford in 1994, eventually rising to vice president for operations. He has spent 12 years at Hanford, including a stint managing Bechtel's construction and other service activities at the Washington Public Power Supply System's Reactor No. 2. |
