This story was published Friday October 24th 2003 By John Stang, Herald staff writer The Tri-City Industrial Development Council's board passed a resolution Thursday to support Department of Energy efforts to shut down Hanford's Fast Flux Test Facility. The vote reversed TRIDEC's decadelong stance of backing the potential revival of the dormant experimental reactor. The new resolution reflects a position that TRIDEC has been easing into for at least a year - that FFTF's shutdown is inevitable and TRIDEC should focus on other economic development efforts. TRIDEC is a nonprofit corporation and the umbrella for Tri-City economic development efforts. Its board represents numerous government, private and Hanford interests. At least 30 board members attended the meeting, with several abstaining from voting, said TRIDEC President Carl Adrian. The resolution received an overwhelming majority of the votes, said Adrian. He did not have an exact count available. Only a few grassroots organizations, including Citizens for Medical Isotopes led by Benton County Commissioner Claude Oliver, are still actively lobbying for the reactor's revival. Oliver declined to comment on the resolution because he had not seen it. He said he was surprised the vote had taken place. |
