SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions Inc. says the first shipment of depleted uranium from South Carolina's Savannah River Site has arrived at its facility in Utah's west desert.

Company President Val Christensen made the announcement in a statement Monday, saying the shipment arrived Sunday night.

The arrival comes just days after Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and the U.S. Department of Energy struck a deal that would prohibit the waste from the site near Aiken, S.C., from being permanently buried in Utah until stricter state guidelines are put in place.

The DOE agreed to place its waste in temporary storage once it arrives in Utah.

State regulators say they need more time to determine whether depleted uranium can safely be disposed of at the EnergySolutions' site.
