This story was published Friday May 23rd 2008 By the Herald staff The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved an additional $300 million for cleanup of the Department of Energy's nuclear sites, including Hanford. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., worked to include the money in the Senate supplemental appropriations bill for fiscal year 2008 because of her concern that cleanup deadlines at Hanford are at risk and layoffs may be required. "This funding is a way to restore some of the shortfall that has been created through years and years of administration cuts," she said in a statement. The Senate passed the domestic portion of the bill 75-22. It next goes to the House. The president has threatened a veto of any domestic funding included in the supplemental appropriations bill, which also includes war funding. Although the domestic portion of the bill passed the Senate with a veto-proof majority, it's unclear if the president still could veto the spending if it's combined with war funding. |
