Fluor Daniel staff hits injury-free milestone

This story was published Wednesday December 30th 1998

By the Herald staff

The administrative staff of Fluor Daniel Hanford has worked 3 million hours without losing a day to job-related injuries.

Fluor's salaried administrative staff of about 700 people includes office workers, project managers and engineers.

That translates to no lost-day accidents among this group since Fluor Daniel Hanford took over running the site Oct. 1, 1996, said Dave Jackson, Fluor's director of occupational safety and health.

"I continue to be impressed by our employees' daily focus on eliminating workplace hazards and the overall commitment to a safe workplace,"said Ron Hanson, Fluor Daniel Hanford president.

The administrative workers are one segment of about 2,600 people directly employed by Fluor Daniel Hanford. The rest of the employees are the nonadministrative people doing on-site hands-on work.

Jackson said the perfect record posted by the Fluor administrative staff helped improve overall Hanford operations - Department of Energy, Bechtel, Fluor and other contractors - from having the second worst to the second best safety record among all DOE sites over the past two years.

Overall, Hanford showed about three lost-time accidents per 200,000 hours worked in 1997 - the last full year statistics are available. The 200,000-hour figure translates to roughly 100 people working for one year.

The average across the entire DOE complex is 3.75 lost-time accidents per 200,000 hours worked. Savannah River has the best record at slightly less than two accidents per 200,000 hours worked.

Fluor Daniel Hanford's overall contribution - blue and white collar employees - to Hanford's showing is 2.5 lost-time accident, per 200,000 hours worked.

Jackson said the perfect record posted by the administrative employees led to an estimated $1.4 million savings each year - for a total of $2.8 million - in money not spent on medical costs, workers compensation and training replacements.
